A lock that’s suddenly hard to turn, sticking, or not latching the way it used to isn’t always a sign that the lock itself is broken. Doors shift slightly on their hinges over time, and a deadbolt that no longer lines up cleanly with the strike plate on the frame can feel like a failing lock even when the mechanism inside is fine.
Before we recommend anything, we check both. We’ll look at the lock cylinder for wear, and we’ll check whether the door and strike plate are still aligned correctly. Sometimes the fix is as simple as adjusting the strike plate. Other times the internal pins or springs have worn down and the lock needs to be repaired or replaced. We won’t know which one it is until we’ve actually looked at your door.
This matters most on older hardware. If your home still has its original locks, years of regular use combined with small shifts in the door itself are enough to make a deadbolt feel stiff long before the lock is actually failing. Newer hardware can have the same issue if it was installed slightly out of alignment to begin with.

Homeowners often assume a lock problem means a new lock. That’s not always the case.
Rekeying usually makes sense when the hardware is in good condition and the real issue is who has access to it, for example after moving into a home or losing track of a key. The lock itself stays on the door, but the old keys stop working.
Repair usually makes sense when the lock or door alignment has a specific, identifiable problem, like a worn pin or a shifted strike plate, and the rest of the hardware is otherwise solid.
Replacement usually makes sense when the lock is damaged beyond a reasonable repair, doesn’t match the rest of your door hardware, or you want a different type of lock altogether, like moving from a standard deadbolt to a smart lock.

If you’ve just moved into a home, you don’t automatically know how many keys exist or who has them. Rekeying the locks that are already on the doors is often a practical first step. It’s usually faster and less involved than replacing every lock, and if the existing hardware is in good shape, there’s no real reason to.
If your exterior doors have different lock brands or models, we can often key them alike during the same visit, so one key works for all of them. We’ll check what’s currently installed and let you know whether that’s a good fit for your doors.
This is also a good time to take stock of who has physical access.
